SHELBY TWP. – Port Huron Northern rolled into the state tennis meet by winning a Division 1 regional Friday at Utica Eisenhower.
The Huskies won five flights and took second in the other three to finish with 29 points. Eisenhower was second at 23.
“We played very well,” Northern coach Nate Labelle said. “All of the singles guys won all their flights. They played some tough ones and did very well. The doubles players are improving. We had some tough finals.
“We’re looking good. I think we played very well today.”
Northern matched up with Utica in all four singles flights, taking them all, and matched up with Eisenhower in all four doubles flights on the day.
Franklin Brozovich won at No. 1 singles for the Huskies, winning his finals match 6-1, 6-1. Chris Adams won 6-0, 6-0 in the finals at No. 2 singles, John Betrus won 6-4, 7-5 in the finals at No. 3 singles, and Nishaan Makim won 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in the finals at No. 4 singles.
Tommy Lees and Dane Wirtz brought home a No. 2 doubles title for the Huskies, winning 7-6, 7-5.
The teams of Abhishek Tekumulla and Varun Nandamudi (No. 1), Clay Wilson and Hunter Austin (No. 3) and Gabe Ferguson and Paul Brettschneider (No. 4) all placed second for Northern.
The Huskies advance to the state finals Oct. 17 and 18 at the Midland Tennis Center.
